A FEW QUESTIONS FOR…

Is it difficult to find a role in Romania, or to appear in a film in general? It is really complicated, because we make roughly twenty films a year. On the other hand, every year the university sends about forty students into the professional world who want to act in a film or onstage, and that number is rather large for the size of our market. What was your education like? Personally, I first wanted to be a singer, so I went to the conservatory. I sang at the opera in Bucharest, but then I wanted to be an actor. That’s why I transferred to the secondary school of acting, where I spent four years, and now I’m in my second year at university. In a few months, probably in September, I’ll begin working on a new film, Lover Boy, with director Catalin Mitulescu. How do you see the Romanian New Wave? I think we have good stories and talented directors. We love our audiences, and we want to show them something special. Life in Romanian is alright, but we’re also afflicted by lots of problems, which we want to share with people onscreen. And what is Romania’s biggest problem? Now it’s money, particularly for my grandparents, because they’ve had their pensions cut by twenty-six percent. But the politicians still get to keep their high salaries. Which actor or actress would you most like to work with? In Romania we’ve got lots of talented actors who I don’t know personally, and who don’t know me personally. We get to know each other on-site. But I would love to act alongside big-name stars like Al Pacino or Robert De Niro.
